How we Came to Love
Teddy Bears
My father’s best friend from childhood made handmade jointed teddy bears, and through his love for bear-making, my mother discovered her own passion for creating them. I grew up going shopping for teddy bear supplies with my mother—honestly, it was and still is my favourite kind of shopping.
On one of those shopping trips, I found the perfect teddy bear pattern. To my surprise, my mother secretly made that bear for me and gifted him to me on my 18th birthday. He became, and still is, my best friend. At times, it feels like he is the only one I can talk to, cry with, and feel completely accepted by—just as I am, not as others expect me to be.
After receiving him, my love for jointed teddy bears grew even stronger. I began making bears as a hobby and slowly built my own collection, improving with every one I made. Eventually, family and friends encouraged me not to keep my talent to myself, but to share it with others.
That is when I started making and selling jointed teddy bears at flea markets. As orders increased, my husband stepped in to help—and before long, he too fell in love with the art of making jointed teddy bears.
Today, we are ready to take our skills even further. Our dream is to give little boys and girls their forever best friend—someone they can share secrets with, cry with, and grow alongside while being completely and beautifully themselves.
Mohair
The basic of mohair is that it is the preferred option as this is what the first bears was made of. Mohair is made from Angora Goat. It is weaved into a cotton backing then dyed into the most beautiful colours as well as different lengths. This option also comes in the largest variety of styles and colours.
Synthetic
This is synthetic fibres designed to resemble fur. It is typically made from synthetic polymeric fibres. Synthetic is knitted backing where Mohair is on a woven fabric backing. Which makes it more streety, so the bears are vatter. These are the best for soft toys as it is machine washable.
Kohair
Kohair is a bit cheaper option to Mohair but still a good choice. Kohair is made from sheared mohair. It is trapped in 100% cotton backing fibre. So, unlike the traditional fur there is no need to use animal skin.
Difference between Teddies &
Teddy Bears
So, there is one big difference between teddies and teddy bears. A teddy is normally the stuffed toys that most children and adults know. They are the bear shape soft toy that is widely available to purchase. A teddy bear is a jointed bear these are mostly only collectors’ items and not so widely available but also comes in different shapes and sizes.
How to take care of your bear
Jointed especially Mohair bears should only ever be surface cleaned and never in a washing. Keep out of direct sunlight as it can cause the colour to fade. If your teddy bear needs to be cleaned:
- Shake it out.
- Give your teddy bear a gentile shake and brush it out every day with a bear brush please do not use a normal hair Bruch as it is not made for the fine hair. This will keep the dust away and keep its fur the same as when you bought him/her. If you can change the settings on your vacuumed, you can give your bear a gentle vacuum instead of brushing him/her.
- Keep out of direct sunlight.
- Sunlight causes the fur to fade, even if it is from the other side of the room. Keep the curtains drawn on very sunny days. Also consider storing them in a dark room. If you are warried about fading let us make clothes for them to help protect them from any unnecessary light. They will also look super cute if dressed.
- Clean once a month
- We advise to clean your teddy bear with a clean damp white cloth, a colour cloth can transfer colour to your bear that we do not want. After washing your bear air dry it by hanging it on the washing line or by hair dryer (if you are going to use your hair dryer use die lowest or coolest setting on your hair dryer). Once your bear is dry comb it out with a large toothbrush or a dog brush that you only use for your bear not to put new dust back on him.
- Store in a cool dry place
- If you need to store your bear, please never store them in a plastic bag as this holds moisture and promotes mould and damp that is not good for your bear. Wrap your bear in cotton or acid free paper and please in a cardboard box to keep it safe and sound.
- Love your teddy bear
- The most important thing to do and remember is to love your bear as he will be there for you no matter what. If the teddy bear maybe has a tear or a hole please contact us so we can fix him straight away before it gets worse.
